In an excellent article from The Hill, Senator Jim Webb (D-VA) makes it clear why Bob McDonnell’s graduate school thesis is fair game in this election. Remember, it was the Republican Party that tried to stem Webb’s momentum in 2006 by bringing up the Senator’s own writing. But now Republicans are calling foul when Democrats borrow their own techniques. Whereas Webb’s semi-controversial writings were largely works of fiction, the same cannot be said for McDonnell’s thesis. As Webb explains, McDonnell’s thesis is “essentially a political manifesto” which gives voters an idea of the McDonnell’s true political beliefs. During this entire campaign McDonnell has tried to convince Virginians that he is a moderate Republican, but if you read his thesis, nothing seems further from the truth. It is disingenuous for the Republican Party to try to compare McDonnell’s extreme thesis to the works of fiction penned by Senator Webb. If you have not had a chance to read the thesis yet, you should definitely check it out and forward it to any of your friends in Virginia. Below you can find a link to the article from The Hill and a link to McDonnell’s thesis. Check it out yourself and make up your own mind. I think you will be very shocked to see what McDonnell wrote. If he considers himself moderate, I have no idea what he considers conservative.

Are you seriously still talking about the thesis?!
ReplyDeleteI think it's fair game until McDonnell explains himself. I haven't been satisfied with any of his half-responses yet. Thanks for reading the blog, Betty!
